ChevronTexaco is an underwriting partner of the project -- which includes a book, DVD documentary and music CD -- as part of its ongoing commitment to encourage investment in Africa and to support the fight against HIV and AIDS.
"A Day in the Life of Africa" captures contemporary life in Africa with more than 250 stunning photographs taken by 100 of the world's best photojournalists on one day -- Feb. 28, 2002.
Commenting on the project, David J. O'Reilly, chairman and chief executive officer of ChevronTexaco, said: "We are proud to celebrate a continent where we have worked every day for almost 100 years and we are delighted to participate in a project that helps to change perceptions of Africa and to show the world a view not often seen -- the limitless potential of Africa and the millions of quiet stories of accomplishment that occur each day."
"ChevronTexaco is honored to support these efforts and to help with the fight against the spread of HIV and AIDs in Africa," said O'Reilly.
All publishing profits from this book will go to "A Day in the Life of Africa" AIDs Education Fund, administered by the Tides Foundation, San Francisco, in conjunction with Harvard AIDS institute, John Hopkins University Center for Communications Programs and the Soul City Foundation, South Africa.
Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Mpilo Tutu captures the book's intent in the foreword: "These photographs speak eloquently about the wide range of human conditions that exist within this vast continent. You will see people going about their daily lives, men and women at work, parents caring for their families, children in school and at play. You will see landscapes, cities, villages, and home, customs, culture and religious practices that are uniquely African. These portraits of the daily lives of African people and places can invoke deeper public understanding of our continent.
"If we are to realize the true potential of our African motherland, it will take immense effort and commitment from those who call the continent of Africa their home, as well as the entire international community."
Project director, David Cohen, said: "We are delighted to have ChevronTexaco partner with us on this project. When we first started to consider putting together a book about Africa, we knew two things -- first we wanted to provide the world with a view of the rich diversity of Africa not often covered by headline-driven media. Secondly, we all had a strong desire to help in the fight against HIV and AIDs. Having traveled to Africa a number of times, I was taken by its people and by its culture and I could think of no better place to shoot a new Day in the Life book."
"A Day in the Life of Africa" will be published in the United States, Canada, Francophone countries, South Africa, Germany and Australia.
