ViroLogic Announces Distribution Agreement with Esoterix for HIV Phenotypic Drug Resistance Testing: Leading Laboratory Service To Offer ViroLogic's HIV Phenotypic Line of Tests

PRNewswire - December 6, 2001

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC) today announced the Company has signed a distribution and marketing agreement with Esoterix Inc., a leading, privately held laboratory services company. ViroLogic will be the preferred provider of HIV phenotypic drug resistance testing for the Esoterix Infectious Disease Center, which focuses on assisting providers in diagnosing, monitoring and treating patients with HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

Under the agreement, Esoterix's sales representatives will promote ViroLogic's PhenoSense line of HIV drug resistance tests. Esoterix Infectious Disease Center currently serves a national network of reference and hospital- based laboratories.

"This agreement should further increase awareness and expand availability of our tests, which make up the most comprehensive line available in the industry," said Bill Young, ViroLogic's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

"We look forward to working closely with Esoterix to educate physicians and other caregivers about the benefits of HIV resistance testing in general and our tests in particular."

HIV drug resistance is a rapidly growing problem that is jeopardizing the success of AIDS therapy for the nearly 500,000 Americans being treated with antiviral drugs for HIV infection. Widespread resistance to these drug regimens is greatly complicating treatment for these patients, especially those who have been on treatment for many years and have developed resistance to individual drugs, or even to entire classes of therapy.

"ViroLogic's state-of-the-art HIV PhenoSense drug resistance tests will add tremendous value to our current clients, and help us penetrate this fast-growing part of the patient testing market," said Ted E. Schutzbank, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer for the Esoterix Infectious Disease Center.

"Our customers are demanding the kind of advanced, easy-to- interpret information that ViroLogic's tests provide."
