The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Commemorates World AIDS Day at the United Nations

PRNewswire - November 30, 1999

NEW YORK, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is pleased to join the Magic Johnson Foundation for a symposium and other activities related to World AIDS Day at the United Nations. The day's theme, "Children Left Behind," will focus on children from around the world who have been orphaned by AIDS.

"The travesty of children orphaned by AIDS underscores that we must do more to protect all children from the ravages of this horrible disease," said Paul Glaser, Chairman of the Board of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. "In a world where 1,800 children are infected by HIV each day, efforts must aggressively continue to increase the availability of treatment and care that will significantly reduce HIV transmission between mother and child."

According to a U.N. report released last week, 33.6 million people, including 1.2 million children are carrying the HIV virus. The same report noted that of the 22.4 million people in sub-Saharan Africa with HIV, 55% or 12.2 million of them are women and the majority is of childbearing age. In the U.S. about 50% of new HIV cases occur in people less than 25 years of age, and about 25% are in people 21 and younger.

"We must maintain a sense of urgency and not tolerate the complacency threatening our children," added Glaser.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding, and conducting basic pediatric AIDS research. The Foundation's goals include reducing HIV transmission from an HIV-infected mother to her newborn, prolonging and improving the lives of children living with HIV, eliminating HIV in infected children, and promoting awareness and compassion about HIV/AIDS.
