Eastern High School Students to Learn How to Live Smart in the Age of AIDS Through Award-Winning, Interactive Stage Play

PRNewswire - Tuesday, November 30, 1999

Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre to Present Program that Provides Positive Role Models for Teens on World AIDS Day, December 1

WHAT:

The Educational Theatre from Kaiser Permanente, Mid-Atlantic States, will perform "Secrets," a live, 70-minute, interactive stage play about HIV/AIDS for 200 Eastern High School Students on World AIDS Day, December 1 at 10:00 a.m. One of several activities scheduled by the D.C. Public Schools during AIDS Awareness Week, the award-winning program was developed to increase student knowledge of HIV and its modes of transmission. Based on true stories, the play features "actor/educators" who offer teen audiences ways to deal with the dilemmas presented by HIV and AIDS.

"Secrets," now in its eleventh season, is one of a number of educational theatre productions created by Kaiser Permanente as a dramatic way to reach children, teens and adults with important health education messages. As a non-profit organization, Kaiser Permanente presents these programs free as part of its long-standing commitment to preventive health and community service.

The goal of World AIDS Day is to motivate people, particularly adolescents and young adults, to speak out about the issue and educate themselves and others to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. While countless organizations have worked to help prevent HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the virus continues to spread, especially among young people who falsely assume they are not at risk. In fact, of the approximately 40,000 new cases of HIV occurring each year, as many as 50% are among young people under age 25.
