National PTA World Aids Day Web Site Offers Resources, Interactive Features

PRNewswire - November 22, 1999

CHICAGO, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- AIDS prevention, state hotline numbers, and tips for talking about AIDS with children are just a few of the features on National PTA's web site devoted to the topic at http://www.pta.org/events/wad99 . For the third consecutive year, National PTA is providing these materials in anticipation of World AIDS Day December 1.

The theme this year is "End the Silence Listen, Learn, Live!" and focuses on the importance of AIDS awareness and communication about the disease within families and communities. The web page includes clips from the "Can We Talk?" video produced by the National Education Association and information from the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

On December 1, interactive maps of the United States and the globe will be added that compare AIDS statistics this year with those from last year. A quiz to test visitors' understanding about AIDS will also be available online. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to help create an AIDS awareness quilt for the site. It is based on the NAMES project quilt that memorializes those who have died of AIDS.

National PTA will also participate in "A Day Without Art" on December 1 when all of the children's art on the PTA's web site will be draped for the day.

The purpose of the web site is to encourage local PTAs to plan activities for World AIDS day that will foster communication about the subject in schools and communities.

National PTA, founded in 1897, is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. Membership in National PTA is open to anyone who is concerned with the education, health and welfare of children. For more information on National PTA membership, please call the Membership Department at 800-307-4782, or visit National PTA's web site at http://www.pta.org .
