The Health Network to Participate in World AIDS Day Leading Television Health Network and Internet Site to Show Original AIDS-related Programming and Content and Join in Cable Positive Programming and Events, December 1, 1999

PRNewswire - November 22, 1999

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Health Network, the leading health destination on television and the Internet, will join Cable Positive, the cable industry's AIDS action organization, to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS on World AIDS Day, December 1, 1999. AIDS is now the second leading cause of death among all persons aged 25-44.

On December 1, The Health Network will air original AIDS-related programming, including:

-- 1 p.m. (ET) and 10 a.m. (PT) - Baby Steps

A 30-minute live segment will discuss the issue of children and AIDS. It will feature Dr. Michael Muszynski, Director of Infectious Disease at the Nemours Children's Clinic in Orlando, FL and a discussion about developments in research and medication, and the issues unique to children living with AIDS.

-- 2 p.m. (ET) and 11 a.m. (PT) - Women and Children First

A special episode titled "The Aging of AIDS: HIV Seniors" will include a 65-year-old woman who is a Senior Safe Sex Educator and HIV positive. She will discuss sex and the senior citizen as well as her personal story of how she contracted the disease. In the same program, Dr. Allan Frank will talk about the rising number of women infected with HIV.

-- 3 p.m. (ET) and 12 p.m. (PT) - A Healthy Balance

A 30-minute live segment will feature an advocate who fought for new laws and greater social acceptance of AIDS when her three hemophiliac children contracted the disease through tainted blood. Another guest will discuss how life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS profoundly affect the family and loved ones of the victims.

Throughout the day, The Health Network will air AIDS-related news briefs and, at 8 p.m. (ET), will join in the broadcast of a national public service announcement "roadblock," at which time all participating cable networks will simultaneously air one of several AIDS education announcements.

The Health Network's fully-integrated Web site, TheHealthNetwork.com will feature its AIDS and HIV-related information section, adding new articles, a live chat and a link to Cable Positive's AIDS-related information and events.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported receiving the highest volume of calls in a single day during a past Cable Positive campaign. Last year's event was the largest on-air programming initiative ever assembled, attracting over 620 networks and systems.
