The South Africans -- one a leading Muslim, the other Hindu -- are both from Cape Town, site of the Dec. 1-8 Parliament of the World's Religions. Each has been key to the interreligious movement in post-apartheid South Africa.
Ashwin Tikamjee is president of the Hindu Maha Sabha of South Africa, the largest Hindu organization in southern Africa. He is also vice president of the Hindu Council of Africa and in 1998, served as an Acting Judge of the nation's High Court.
Ebrahim Rasool is chair of the African National Congress in the Western Cape Province. He has served on the provincial Executive Council for Health and Social Services and as National Secretary of the Call of Islam.
The program for Sunday's Parliament dinner will begin with a performance by the Buddhist Koyko Daruma Taiko Group and close with a song by a youth choir drawn from Chicago's diverse religious and spiritual communities.
There will also be a preview of the Cape Town Parliament. In December, 6,000 people of all ages -- religious leaders, scholars, social activists, and others -- will celebrate the diversity of the world's spiritual and religious traditions and consider their relevance in the new millennium. More than 700 presentations will be given on everything from AIDS to Zoroastrianism.
