PSI launched The Female Condom(TM) as the "care contraceptive sheath" in Zimbabwe, becoming the first third party organization to test-market the product on a large scale in a developing country. PSI and its affiliates are now social-marketing female condoms in seven countries and collaborating with UNAIDS to further expand the use of female condoms worldwide.
O.B. Parrish, Chairman of The Female Health Company, stated, "We are pleased that PSI, a world class social-marketing organization, is introducing female condoms in developing countries. They understand the product and the global public health sector. Since the female condom was introduced in Zimbabwe, orders have been received for more than 850,000 units. Zimbabwe has a population of approximately 11 million individuals."
PSI is one of the leading social-marketing organizations in the world, with projects in more than 45 countries on five continents. In its 1997 Annual Report, PSI noted it had distributed 528 million male condoms, more than any non-government organization (NGO).
The Female Health Company has a multi-year agreement with UNAIDS to supply The Female Condom(TM) to developing countries at a special price based on global volume.
The Female Health Company, based in Chicago, owns certain worldwide rights to The Female Condom(TM) including patents which have been issued in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, The People's Republic of China, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea and Australia. The Female Condom(TM) is the only available product controlled by a woman that protects against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS, and unintended pregnancy.
