Female Condom Launched In Canada

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Tuesday October 21 8:31 AM EDT

CHICAGO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Female Health Company (AMEX:FHC) reported that the Reality(R) female condom has been launched by Montreal-based Pharmascience and is now available to Canadian women and their partners throughout the country.

"The addition of Canada to the growing list of countries where the female condom is available is consistent with our strategic objective of providing women around the world with this new and revolutionary option to protect themselves," said Dr. Mary Ann Leeper, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Female Health Company.

"The availability of the female condom in Canada will make a difference particularly to women, who are more susceptible to STDs than are men and, of course, more affected by unwanted pregnancies," added Dr. Marion Powell of Women's College Hospital and the Bay Centre for Birth Control in Toronto. "The fact is, some women and men can't use latex condoms and some men won't take responsibility for safer sex. Reality(R) gives women in these circumstances needed control over their sexual health and well-being."

Pharmascience is a Canadian-owned pharmaceutical manufacturer. According to IMS Canada figures, Pharmascience has been the fastest growing pharmaceutical company in Canada -- brand name or generic -- for the past three years. Since its founding in 1983 by two pharmacists, the firm has experienced compounded annual sales growth of 35% with current annual sales at approximately CA $70 million.

The Female Health Company, based in Chicago, owns certain worldwide rights to the female condom including patents which have been issued in the U.S., Japan, the European Union, The People's Republic of China, Canada, Brazil and Australia. The female condom is the only available product controlled by a woman that protects against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and unintended pregnancy.

The female condom is in the early stages of global commercialization. It is currently marketed in the U.S., U.K., South Korea, Taiwan and Holland. As part of the United Nations Global Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) it was recently launched in Zimbabwe. Further, The Female Health Company recently signed an agreement with a Brazilian partner which plans to launch the product in Brazil on December 1, 1997. The Company is in discussions with potential partners for India, The People's Republic of China, Europe, the U.S. and other countries.
