Los Angeles Proclaims October AIDS TREATMENT EQUALS LIFE Month: 50 Local Media Outlets Join AIDS Healthcare Foundation to Get Message Out About HIV Treatment and Testing, Raise Funds for Critical AIDS Services

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Wednesday October 1 3:29 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the nation's largest HIV/AIDS medical provider, today proudly kicks off TREATMENT EQUALS LIFE Month, an October-long awareness and fundraising effort for AIDS treatment and outreach led by AHF. Over 50 Southern California media outlets including radio, television and print will be taking to the airwaves, newspapers and magazines to help AHF get the message out about HIV treatment and testing and raise much-needed revenue for AHF's services.

And in an unprecedented move, the City of Los Angeles, the Mayor's Office and the L.A. County Board of Supervisors have officially proclaimed October 1997 as TREATMENT=LIFE Month in recognition of the stunning success of new HIV/AIDS medical treatments -- the first time ever that an entire month was officially proclaimed and devoted to an AIDS cause by Los Angeles. This proclamation recognizes the tireless work of AIDS Healthcare Foundation on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS.

``As we launch TREATMENT=LIFE Month, I am proud and thankful for such a tremendous outpouring of support from Southern California's media,'' said AHF President Michael Weinstein. ``With this support, it has never been easier to help the fight against AIDS. Listeners can simply pick up their phone and call 1-900-443-LIFE nation-wide to make a one-time $25 dollar contribution to TREATMENT=LIFE (billed directly to the caller's phone bill) and help people living with HIV and AIDS get the treatment that really can equal life.''

The TREATMENT=LIFE Month-with over 45 stations on board and more joining daily-will include:

* AHF public service announcements about HIV and AIDS testing, treatment and prevention;

* talk and public affairs shows featuring local radio personalities, AIDS Healthcare Foundation professionals, celebrities, politicians and the public;

* TREATMENT=LIFE Day, Wednesday, October 29th-a day-long, blow out, fundraising and visibility push by TREATMENT=LIFE Month participants;

* and the opportunity for listeners to make a one-time $25 dollar donation to AHF's TREATMENT=LIFE Fund simply by calling 1 (900) 443-LIFE. (900) 443-5433-no credit card necessary -- the donation will be billed to the caller's telephone bill (must be 18 years and older to call).

This past week, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and its Medical Director, Charles Farthing, MD, have been the focus of enormous local, national and international media attention regarding Dr. Farthing's recent controversial proposal to step forward and be the first volunteer to test a possible preventive live virus AIDS vaccine. Since Dr. Farthing's call to fellow AIDS physicians in the August Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, 50 volunteers representing seven (7) different countries have stepped forward to join him as volunteers in the proposed clinical trial.

In addition, some of AHF's other noteworthy recent public outreach includes:

* opening the WEHO Lounge located in the heart of West Hollywood, California in June 1997. WEHO Lounge-the first establishment of its kind in the nation-is AHF's unique synergy of a sleekly restyled coffee house combined with a low-key, accessible HIV/AIDS treatment information and HIV testing center.

* Introducing THE COCKTAIL HOUR, regular weekly medical updates, discussions and support group meetings for people with HIV/AIDS. Built on the concept of the supportive and nurturing environment fostered in many 12-step recovery programs, AHF's COCKTAIL HOUR which kicked off in May, is also part of the comprehensive community outreach of TREATMENT=LIFE.

AHF's TREATMENT=LIFE Program has also been honored this year with wonderful support from some of Hollywood's finest. Generous donations have come from Elizabeth Taylor's AIDS Foundation, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and Liza Minnelli, who designated one night of her Los Angeles tour as a benefit for TREATMENT=LIFE, as well as Aaron Spelling, who donated over $100,000 worth of merchandise from his canceled show, Pacific Palisades to AHF's Out of the Closet fundraising thrift shop chain.
