Saliva Diagnostics' Sero*Strip HIV was able to detect all of the HIV positive samples, except for one specimen of the rare group O infection (n=3). Sero*Strip was able to detect all of the other group O samples in the study compared to other manufacturers' tests, which missed at least one or more of the group O samples. Overall, sensitivity and specificity for Sero*Strip was 99.5 percent and 100 percent respectively. Samples from 262 individuals (193 HIV positive, 69 HIV negative) from Africa, Asia, Central America and North America were used in the study.
"According to the study, our Sero*Strip HIV, which is the least expensive of the tests studied, was the easiest to interpret," said SDS President Kenneth McLachlan. "The three-step Sero*Strip test was also rated one of the easiest to use since most of the tests studied required seven or more steps for completion. Our test does not require washes, prefiltration or reagent preparation."
The report also emphasized the need for rapid HIV tests, stating, "The expanding epidemic has required the development of simple, rapid immunoassays that do not require expensive laboratory equipment or extensive technical training."
"We are pleased the merits of our rapid test products continue to be recognized by independent sources and look forward to increased demand for our products as the need for low cost, high performance alternative testing technology expands," concluded McLachlan.

This press release contains forward-looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Factors that could cause actual results to differ materially include the following: changes in demand for the company's products, the ability of the company to increase manufacturing capacity, the ability of the company to obtain regulatory approvals, success in technological advances and their implementation, cost and yield issues associated with production, the ability of the company to raise additional capital, and other risk factors listed in the company's Amendment No. 1 to the Registration Statement dated June 13, 1997.
