INTERNET alfredo Cybercafe to host the website launch of controversial AIDS researcher Peter Duesberg - WWW.DUESBERG.COM

PR Newswire, Wednesday December 4 1996 - 5:18 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1996--Peter Duesberg Website Launch Dec. 9, 1996, 10:00 a.m. INTERNET alfredo. 790-A Brannan Street, San Francisco

Peter Duesberg, Berkeley biologist-errant, who enraged AMA officials by opposing the belief that HIV causes AIDS, will be on hand at INTERNET alfredo for the launch party inaugurating his premiere website.

Peter Duesberg is a professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His work on retroviruses led to the isolation of the first cancer gene in 1970 and he has since been the recipient of several prestigious awards.

Duesberg's current work has focused on the retrovirus HIV which is generally accepted in the medical and scientific community to be the cause of AIDS. He has refuted this virus-AIDS hypothesis amidst much controversy in articles appearing in such journals as Cancer Research, Lancet, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Science, Nature, Journal of AIDS, AIDS Forschung, Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapeutics, New England Journal of Medicine, and Research in Immunology.

Instead, Duesberg has proposed that long-term recreational drug use and treatment with AZT (the drug most commonly prescribed to prevent and treat AIDS) actually induce the symptoms associated with AIDS.

While no one challenges Duesberg's credentials, and several prominent scientists support his findings, his theories have been ill-received by the majority of the HIV-AIDS research community. The result is that funding for further research into alternative causalities of AIDS (namely drug abuse) has been all but cut off. Additionally, many of the most widely read journals have denied publication of Duesberg's controversial ideas.

Through the use of the new media arena, the Internet, Duesberg and his supporters hope to both dispense information and raise money for their research.

Those who access Duesberg's Web site will be able to join an e-mail discussion list, search through archived scientific papers, and make a tax deductible donation to support further research.

INTERNET alfredo is a Cybercafe located in SOMA (San Francisco, CA), the heart of the multimedia explosion.
