God's Love We Deliver is a nonprofit organization based in New York City which prepares and delivers hot meals to homebound people with AIDS throughout the New York metropolitan area. GLWD staff and volunteers prepare and deliver two free, well-balanced meals to homebound people with AIDS each weekday. The organization also provides nutrition education and counseling to HIV-positive people and their care providers.
Founded in 1985, GLWD today serves more than 1,000 clients each weekday through a network of 2,285 volunteers. To date, it has delivered more than 2 million meals to more than 13,000 people, and has counseled more than 15,000 HIV-positive people and their care providers on the importance of diet and nutrition in managing HIV. The organization was nominated for the Sara Lee Foundation Leadership Award by Coach, the New York-based leather accessories division of Sara Lee Corporation.
Each year the Sara Lee Foundation Leadership Award program honors nonprofit organizations that demonstrate creative and exemplary leadership in improving life for disadvantaged people in communities where divisions of Sara Lee Corporation have facilities. This year, GLWD was one of three winners selected from 81 organizations nominated by Sara Lee divisions. The other winners are: The Children's Center for the Physically Handicapped in Winston-Salem, N.C., nominated by Sara Lee Personal Products; and Work and Rehabilitation Centers of Greater Cincinnati, Inc., nominated by Hillshire Farm & Kahn's.
"Sara Lee Corporation recognizes the importance of involvement in the community," said Murphy. "God's Love We Deliver is unique in both the size of its client base and the scope of its services. We are pleased to assist the organization in its mission through our employee volunteers and through the 1996 Sara Lee Foundation Leadership Award."
The organization plans to use its Leadership Award funds to underwrite the costs associated with its agency-wide food safety initiative. Because GLWD serves people whose immune systems are compromised, food safety is a critical issue. All new volunteers participate in a food safety training program, covering such topics as knife skills and personal hygiene as well as proper food handling and sanitation procedures. In addition, food is prepared according to stringent guidelines to inhibit the growth of common food-borne bacteria.
The Sara Lee Foundation Leadership Award will be applied to these and other food safety initiatives implemented by GLWD, including: food safety tips on clients' weekly menus; an advanced water filtration system to remove bacteria, chemicals and pollutants from the water used to wash vegetables and make soup; and refrigerator magnets given to clients with food safety tips and GLWD telephone numbers.
"We are cooking and delivering more hot, nutritious meals for our homebound neighbors with AIDS every day," said Kathy Spahn, executive director of God's Love We Deliver. "That means we need ongoing training for our volunteers, more reminders for our clients, and extra measures in the kitchen to ensure that as meal production increases, we are able to maintain the high standard of food safety that is so important to the health -- and peace of mind -- of our clients."
The Sara Lee Foundation, founded in 1981, is the philanthropic arm of Sara Lee Corporation. The Corporation has a policy of contributing at least 2% of its annual U.S. pretax income in cash and product donations to nonprofit organizations. Last year, its corporate-wide cash contributions totaled $14.7 million, with 37% of funds serving people who are disadvantaged.
Sara Lee Corporation is a global packaged food and consumer products company with sales of $18.6 billion. Based in New York City, Sara Lee's Coach division is the leading American marketer of quality leathergoods and related accessories.
