OARAC provides advice to the Director of the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) on the planning, coordination and evaluation of research and other activities in respect to acquired immune deficiency syndrome conducted or supported by agencies of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Co-founded in 1988 by Elizabeth Glaser, Susan DeLaurentis and Susie Zeegen, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation is working to find ways to prevent transmission from an infected mother to her newborn, to prolong and improve the lives of children with HIV, to eliminate HIV in infected children and to promote education, awareness and compassion about HIV/AIDS in children. To date, the organization has raised $45 million.
After the death of Elizabeth Glaser in December, 1994, the Foundation initiated the Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award, as a way of carrying on her legacy. This prestigious five-year research award is given to the most outstanding scientists dedicated to bringing an end to pediatric AIDS. In early November of this year, up to five new recipients will be chosen as Elizabeth Glaser Scientists.
