"New Words" will be released in bookstores on Tuesday, Oct. 15. His book is a compilation of 30 poems with a magical history. Slocum has been writing poetry since childhood and has been encouraged by his friends to publish his poems for many years. Finally convinced, he chose his favorite poems and took the initial steps towards publishing his first book last fall. Everything fell into place -- his friends helped with the typesetting and artistic design, local businesses donated their services and Patrick M. Scott, president and CEO of Fisher Broadcasting, wrote the book's foreword. "This has been a very magical process for me, all of this has happened because of other people," said Slocum.
To continue the magic, the Paul G. Allen Foundation for Medical Research will match, dollar for dollar, each sale of "New Words." The purchase price is $12. Each book sold will raise $24 to help children with AIDS at Children's.
One of Slocum's poems, "tiny t-cells," was inspired "by the reality of pediatric AIDS, the fact that there isn't a cure for AIDS and the disease involves loss," he said. "However, through research, more can be done to prolong life for a child with AIDS and bring quality to their days, months, weeks and years on this planet."
Children's Pediatric AIDS Research Center determines the best therapies and methods of preventing transmission from mothers to babies, and provides mothers and children with the most aggressive and advanced technologies available. Working as a team, physicians, researchers, social workers and family support staff have produced significant treatment successes and low rates of transmission from mother to infant. As the AIDS epidemic spreads to more women and children, research for pediatric AIDS becomes increasingly significant.
To order "New Words" by phone, call Children s Gift Box at 206-782-4342. "New Words" may be purchased directly at Independent Booksellers of Washington member stores and the University Book Stores.
"All of your purchase price goes to help children with AIDS," said Slocum. "It is your generosity that will bring hope to our young ones who struggle. It is your kindness that will make the difference. That's the truth!"
