ACT UP has announced that busloads of protesters will arrive at the Capitol Monday morning to disrupt the annual family event in the Capitol Rotunda. The group has billed its demonstration as the "Thousand Grinch March."
"I have never dodged protesters and never will. It's their right to protest. But it's my responsibility to think of the children. And I will not subject hundreds of young children, who come to the Capitol filled with Christmas visions of Santa Claus and candy canes, to ACT UP's crude, harsh demonstrations."
The group's tactics include disrupting events with profanity, whistles and chants, and even aggressive physical disruptions, the Governor's Office said.
"ACT UP should consider how imposing its tactics on children detracts from its advocacy for those afflicted with HIV or AIDS. I am certain many of those afflicted with HIV and AIDS are as disturbed by this as I am."
"I extend my regrets to the many parents who were planning to bring their children to this ceremony, but I am confident they will agree that a graphic ACT UP demonstration has no place in a children's Christmas ceremony."
Ridge's Department of Public Welfare last week announced that the department would begin paying the costs of 31 additional medications for people with HIV and AIDS, through its Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program.
