Targeted Genetics Names Bruce H. Devens Director of Immunology

SEATTLE, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Targeted Genetics Corporation (Nasdaq: TGEN) has named Bruce H. Devens, Ph.D. to the position of director of immunology. He will have responsibility for directing Targeted Genetics' immunology department, and will play a critical role in directing the company's cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-based immunotherapy program.

Dr. Devens, who holds a doctorate in experimental pathology from the University of California, Los Angeles, has focused his research on immune regulation and the role of the immune system in human disease.

Dr. Devens joins Targeted Genetics from Syntex Discovery Research where he was most recently senior department head of inflammation biology and immunology. At Syntex, he had responsibility for managing products at various stages of development, from the laboratory through FDA approval. He previously held positions as senior scientist, and research investigator in the immunopharmacology department at Hoffmann- La Roche. Prior to that Dr. Devens was assistant professor, biomedical sciences (pathology) and biology at the University of California, Riverside. Before joining UC at Riverside, he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Individual Postdoctoral Fellow at Hebrew University- Hadassah Medical School's Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology. Dr. Devens is a member of the American Association of Immunologists.

Targeted Genetics has several product candidates in clinical trials for acquired and inherited diseases, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, cancer, Gaucher disease, and cystic fibrosis (CF). The company recently began a clinical trial to test a new gene therapy for CF using a novel vector (or delivery system) called an adeno-associated virus (AAV) to carry the normal CF gene into the nose and lung of CF patients.

Targeted Genetics Corporation develops gene and cell therapy products for the treatment of certain acquired and inherited diseases. The company's principal focus is on CTL-based immunotherapy for infectious diseases and cancer, in vivo adeno-associated virus-based therapy for cystic fibrosis, and stem cell gene therapy.
