"If I thought Kaiser Permanente wasn't taking care of HIV/AIDS patients with zeal I wouldn't be a physician here," says George Matula, MD, Co-Director of the HIV Research Unit at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. "Our HIV/AIDS programs are world class."
-- Comments in response to criticism by AIDS activists from ACT-UP
World AIDS Day (December 1) serves as a day of mourning, of memorials, and a time to discuss the status of HIV/AIDS care and caring. The theme for this year's observance is "Shared Rights, Shared Responsibilities." Members of ACT-UP are planning to demonstrate at Kaiser Permanente medical centers in San Francisco and Oakland, demanding certain unproven treatments for AIDS patients. Current Kaiser Permanente members who are HIV-positive are focusing their energy in a difficult direction. As members of Kaiser Permanente's AIDS Advisory Board they help guide efforts to continually improve the delivery and quality of care for AIDS patients in Northern California.
