The patent covers a new method to manufacture Celgene's version of the drug, trade named Synovir(TM).
Celgene said the process is especially suitable for large scale manufacture and has been scaled to commercial batch size. This new method has already been used to prepare several hundred thousand capsules, the company noted.
Celgene said Synovir was recently approved for expanded access by the US FDA for AIDS patients suffering from cachexia, a severe wasting condition. Under FDA guidelines, cost reimbursement will be available to the company.
Other on-going trials with Synovir are investigating its utility in treating severe rheumatoid arthritis, cachexia in cancer patients, HIV replication, and modulating levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) in AIDS patients undergoing Interleukin-2 (IL-2) therapy for potential immune restoration.
Celgene Corporation, headquartered in Warren, NJ, uses proprietary expertise in small molecule chemistry to serve the pharmaceutical and allied industries.
