Don't Forget World AIDS Day - December 1

The following was released by the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Chapter. All statistics provided by the Michigan Department of Public Health at October 1995:

* The annual rate of AIDS-related deaths in Michigan continues to rise.

* On World AIDS Day (December 1), sponsored by the World Health Organization, 190 countries will be drawing attention to the AIDS pandemic.

* There are currently 11,500 persons infected with HIV in Michigan, 3,000 of whom have AIDS. There have been 4,200 deaths from AIDS in the state since 1981.

* The American Red Cross has six areas of AIDS education:

1) Fundamentals of HIV -- teaching basic HIV/AIDS awareness and sensitivity.

2) African-American HIV/AIDS, presenting culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS information to African-American youth, families and caregiving adults.

3) Hispanic HIV/AIDS education designed specifically for an Hispanic audience.

4) Peer Education -- training teens to teach their peers about HIV/AIDS.

5) HIV/AIDS in the Workplace -- tailored to management and staff of businesses and corporations.

6) Pre-marital health counseling -- meeting State mandated requirements that all couples complete HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease counseling before marriage.

* To mark World AIDS Day, the Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering free pre-marital health counseling to the first 12 couples to arrive for a class December 1, 6-7 p.m. at Red Cross, 100 Mack Avenue.

* Annual death rates from AIDS in Michigan:

1995 (projected) 700-800 1994 693 1993 686 1992 543

* The tri-county area accounts for 72 percent of all HIV/AIDS cases in Michigan.

Estimated total HIV/AIDS cases

Detroit 5,460 of which 1,197 have AIDS Wayne 1,345 " 317 Oakland 1,275 " 301 Macomb 575 " 135

* in Michigan, more persons have died from AIDS than are alive with AIDS today.

* Michigan ranks 34th in the nation in AIDS cases per population.
