WHY: By June, 1995 the World Health Organization estimated that 20 million men, women, and children worldwide had been infected with HIV and that approximately 4.5 million had developed AIDS. In the US, as of June 1995, 476,899 people had been reported with AIDS to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Young people in particular are increasingly at risk for HIV/AIDS. WHO estimates that one in every four new infections occurs in an adolescent. Each year the number of adolescents infected with HIV doubles. World AIDS Day 1995, the eighth annual observance of World AIDS Day, will be commemorated in 190 countries around the world. Thus World AIDS Day program will launch HIV/AIDS education and prevention efforts around the country on December 1 and throughout the year, as well as unify Americans in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
