Person With AIDS to be Evicted for Thanksgiving

PR Newswire - November 21, 1995 .

PR Newswire - (Nov 21): LOCATION: Entrance Area of the Huntington Shorecliffs Mobile Home Park, 20701 Beach Boulevard Huntington Beach, CA 92648 WHEN: Tuesday, November 21, 1995 TIME: 10 a.m.

As most families are preparing for Thanksgiving dinner this week, one family is preparing for a completely different event. A formal notice was received Saturday, November 18, 1995 by a mother who is the primary caregiver to her son.

Her son is suffering from AIDS. The notice requires that this mother throw her son out of her home by this Friday, or she will be evicted from her home.

Ms. Shirley Lewis made the decision to purchase a mobile home and lease a lot in the Huntington Shorecliffs Mobile Home Park in 1991. At this time, she was already aware that her son was HIV positive. The Park limits residents to those who are at least 55 years old. Ms. Lewis informed the manger at that time of her situation, that her 35 year old son was HIV positive and would eventually require care by her. She asked if this would be possible, in light of the age restriction rules. At that time, the Park Manager indicated that her situation was highly unique and would be addressed at that future time. No specific denial of an exemption was made and Ms. Lewis used her life savings to purchase this home.

This year, Ms. Lewis' son experienced difficulties in maintaining his independence due to the consequences of the AIDS illness and is no longer able to work or live on his own. As predicted, he moved into Ms. Lewis' home and has been cared for by his loving mother.

Now, when her son needs her the most, Ms. Lewis is being forced to either kick her son out on to the street, or face the consequence of eviction herself. She is determined to continue caring for her ill son and has vowed to fight the owners of the park.
