"Positive results in an earlier clinical trial provided important information about the promising anti-viral activity of SP01A," said Thomas Lang, Ph.D., Chief Drug Development Officer. "This clinical trial is an important milestone in the development of SP01A and it is gratifying to see this clinical trial progressing so well," said Lang.
Janet Greeson, Chief Executive Officer, stated, "We are proud of our continued progress in the development of SP01A and consider this to be a major accomplishment for Samaritan. We remain confident that the Phase II monotherapy trial will demonstrate that SP01A represents a new drug with a novel mechanism of action for the treatment of HIV-infected patients."
The trial is a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, study of orally administered SP01A as monotherapy treatment of HIV-infected patients. This trial is designed to accrue treatment-experienced HIV patients that are failing on their current anti-viral therapy. Patients are entered into a 4-week wash-out phase followed by 10 days of monotherapy treatment with SP01A. The primary analysis for the study is the reduction in viral load (log10) in each of the SP01A active and placebo arms, as measured from Baseline to Study-End.
