Human Study Shows SOD/Gliadin - Defenzyme - The Body's Most Powerful Enzyme -- Protects Against Oxidative Stress

Business Wire - August 23, 2004

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.-- Millennium Biotechnologies Pioneers Use of Defenzyme in Medical Nutrition for Immuno-Compromised Patients

Millennium Biotechnologies, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Millennium Biotechnologies Group, Inc. is pleased to announce yet another major study validating the crucial benefits of SOD/Gliadin (DefenZyme(TM)) in reducing oxidative stress in humans.

Millennium owns the exclusive North American rights in the medical market to the body's primary antioxidant defense enzyme, SOD/Gliadin (Defenzyme(TM)), which is an orally effective form of Superoxide dismutase, a key ingredient in the Company's flagship products Resurgex(R), Resurgex Plus(TM) and Defenzyme(TM). These products are proprietary nutritional formulas designed as adjuncts to conventional medical care.

The double blind randomized study, titled "Influence of An Orally Effective SOD On Hyperbaric Oxygen Related Cell Damage" was performed at the University Hospital in Ulm, Germany, and investigated the use of SOD/Gliadin in protecting humans against oxidative stress.

"With statistical significance, SOD/Gliadin was shown to protect the part of the cell that produces energy (mitochondria) from the genetic damage that occurs in the presence of oxidative stress. In addition to protecting mitochondrial DNA, the effectiveness of SOD/Gliadin was also supported by the significantly reduced levels of isoprostanes in the blood, a recognized measure of cellular oxidative damage," states Carl Germano, RD, CNS, CDN, vice president, Research & Product Development, Millennium Biotechnologies.

"Protecting the energy producing part of the cell from oxidative stress is a critical component in addressing the nutritional needs of immuno-compromised individuals, such as those dealing with Cancer and HIV/Aids, which cannot be met with traditional nutritional formulas currently on the market.

"Existing formulas are typically loaded with sugar (corn syrup) and fat (corn oil), which can have an adverse effect on these patients, who typically suffer from glucose dysregulation (pre diabetes) and lipid abnormalities. This study, along with others that show how SOD/Gliadin can lower lactic acid, also demonstrates the importance of using SOD/Gliadin in sports applications as the energy producing part the cells are sensitive to the excess free radicals that are produced after strenuous exercise," states Germano.

The announcement is yet another important milestone in establishing the efficacy and clinical significance of SOD/Gliadin. As such, it has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Free Radical Research. While this is among the first significant human study primed for publication, many other animal and human studies support the use of SOD/Gliadin in nutritional applications for immune and antioxidant support and sports nutrition.

Complete study results are available upon request.
