Advanced Medical Nutritional Supplement Shown to Improve Overall Health and Wellbeing for HIV/AIDS in Clinical Trial: Resurgex(R) Nutritional Formula Beneficial for HIV Patients on HAART Therapy

Business Wire--August 17, 2004

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. -- In a six-month study conducted at the Center for Family Health of St. Mary's Hospital, Hoboken, NJ, Resurgex, a patented multi-action, multi-component nutritional formula designed by Millennium Biotechnologies to address the comprehensive needs of individuals struggling with immuno-compromised conditions, was shown to have a dramatic effective on the health and well being of 25 HIV-1 infected patients on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART).

Common side effects of HIV-1 infection and HAART include metabolic changes, mitochondrial toxicity, and oxidative stress characterized by loss of lean muscle mass, decreased immune function, and diminished quality of life. The objective of this pilot study was to assess the efficacy of Resurgex on these problems. A key ingredient in Resurgex is an orally effective form of Superoxide dismutase, which is the body's primary antioxidant defense enzyme, (SOD)/Gliadin (Defenzyme(TM)).

According to lead investigator Dr. H. Rahman, M.D., "Resurgex was shown to be beneficial to the patients' quality of life, and dramatically improving their key metabolic and immunologic functions."

The study found improvements in a number of key quality of life indicators in symptomatic patients, including:

-- 96 percent of patients reported they were less tired;

-- 91 percent reported increased energy levels;

-- 91 percent said they required less sleep during the day, while 82 percent said they slept better at night;

-- 86 percent said they had a demonstrated improvement in their daily activities;

-- 86 percent reported a demonstrated improvement in their social life, and

-- 82 percent of subjects reported an improvement in their depression.

"For years, the role of nutritional supplements in the treatment of disease and the subsequent effects on quality of life were ignored or discounted by members of the medical community," stated Carl Germano, RD, CNS, CDN and senior vice president; product development and research, Millennium Biotechnologies.

"A growing body of clinical research, like that recently done at St. Mary's is altering this perspective by demonstrating the critical role key nutrients can play in advancing the health and well being of people dealing with immuno-compromised conditions."

The Resurgex study also showed a statistically significant improvement in Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scores, which are commonly used to classify functional impairment. KPS is used to compare the effectiveness of different therapies and to assess the prognosis in individual patients. The lower the KPS score, the worse the survival for most serious illnesses. In this case, over 90 percent of patients who began the trial with low KPS scores raised those scores and were able to perform normal activity with only minor symptoms after just 24 weeks.

The study also showed that compliant patients who took Resurgex had increased improvement in a number of key metabolic parameters that relate to quality of life, including:

-- 75 percent of patients with elevated lactic acid demonstrated a reduction in lactic acid of at least 15 percent (with an average of 31 percent);

-- More than half of patients (53 percent) with depressed CD4 counts had an increase of at least 15 percent in CD4 count, and

-- Over one third (33.3 percent) of patients with depressed hemoglobin experienced improvement of 15 percent.

Resurgex has received AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Approval in New York and Medicaid approval in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Nevada. The product has been available in the medical market for over three years, with over 500,000 doses administered orally with no significant adverse effects reported. Resurgex can also be administered via feeding tube.
