Pathways Announces "Global Caring Partnership" With South African Hospice

Business Wire - April 21, 2003

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Pathways Home, Hospice and Continuous Care (formerly MidPeninsula Pathways), the Bay Area's leading nonprofit provider of home care and hospice services, today announced the formation of a special "Global Caring Project," a partnership with Pretoria Sungardens Hospice, located in South Africa. Pathways is the 22nd member of a network of hospices in the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa that is sharing clinical, emotional and financial support for African hospices that are facing the critical challenges posed by the region's HIV/AIDS epidemic.

South Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world, almost 20 percent of its population, a percentage that increases dramatically in the rural areas served by Sungardens Hospice. The average family income in South Africa is $3200.

"It's especially important given the global political environment that we seek and strengthen relationships with people in other parts of the world," says Pat Wolfe, Hospice Director of Pathways. "We are very excited about the unique insights, global perspective and connections beyond the Bay Area that will result from this relationship. In return, we will offer Sungardens support in facing the awesome challenges of providing end-of-life care in an epidemic situation with extremely limited resources. In particular, the need to provide for the growing number of orphans is critical."

The partnership is made possible under the auspices of the African Partnering Initiative, sponsored by the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA). The African Partnering Initiative seeks to match individual

North American and European hospices for ongoing and intensive relationships in support of the African agency's important work as they confront the growing demands of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The Initiative encourages a mutually beneficial exchange for both Pathways and Sungardens that will foster idea-sharing, educational opportunities, professional exchanges, and learning experiences for both programs. Pathways' nurse Gerry Cummings plans a visit to Sungardens in May as the first face-to-face part of the professional exchange.

"Expectations for the success of this partnership are very high," Wolfe notes. On Sungarden's current wish list is a need for two cars for staff and volunteer travel to the more rural parts of their service area. Pathways' goal is to raise $5,000 each year for Sungardens.

Pathways is a non-profit community organization with one mission: to deliver compassionate, quality health care in your place of residence that promotes comfort, independence and dignity. With headquarters on the Peninsula and offices in San Francisco and Oakland, Pathways serves five Bay Area Counties.
