The patents, when issued, will cover Immune Network's anti-idiotypic antibody and its use in diagnosis and therapy in HIV-related disease. The first patent application focuses on a method of restoring the antibody response in HIV-1 infection by the administration of the 1F7 antibody. The second patent application covers a method for detecting HIV-related pathologies using the 1F7 antibody.
"This is an important milestone for the 1F7 project and these patents, when issued, will significantly strengthen the intellectual property surrounding 1F7," said Allen Bain, President & CEO of Immune Network.
The HIV virus is becoming increasingly resistant to conventional therapeutics due to the high mutation rate of the virus. HIV research is turning towards immune-based therapies which will complement the current highly active antiretroviral therapy currently in use for the treatment of HIV. The 1F7 antibody represents a novel approach to finding an HIV treatment that works by restoring the immune system's equilibrium. Pre-clinical research suggests that 1F7 may enable the immune system to mount an effective antibody and cellular response, even as the virus mutates. Experimental data suggests that 1F7 may be effective not only for HIV, but potentially for Hepatitis C.
Immune Network recently announced that AbNovo Inc. acquired a license option on Immune Network's 1F7 technology as well as its anti-HIV monoclonal antibody, hNM01. Recently, short term financial support of the 1F7 research program was received from the Canadian government.
