It is estimated that one in nine women in Africa is infected with HIV/AIDS and that globally there are 14,000 new infections each day. In the face of this threat, the announcement of an agreement between the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Large Scale Biology Corporation (Nasdaq:LSBC) (Vacaville, Calif.) to jointly develop and manufacture vaccines intended to protect against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is positive news. HPV is associated with cancer and HIV with AIDS. Currently there are no fully effective or cost-effective vaccines available to counter the twin threats.
