Regma Announces Dr. Pablo Bifani, of the Institut Pasteur De Lille, to Lead the Research Collaboration

Business Wire - June 19,2002

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2002--Regma Bio Technologies Limited (Regma) (OTCBB:RBTL) is pleased to announce that Dr. Juan Pablo Bifani will lead the recently announced research collaboration with the Institut Pasteur de Lille, in Lille, France.

Under the collaborative agreement, Regma will sponsor research at the Institut Pasteur de Lille in the development of therapies in the response to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, more particularly against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Dr. Bifani will head the Institute research effort and lead the studies which are a first step towards a broader potential collaboration to establish a joint research unit, aiming at collecting and typing Mtb strains in the development of Regma's phage therapy.

Dr. Juan Pablo Bifani has an extensive publication record, particularly in the field of Mtb research.

Dr. Bifani completed his Doctorate in Microbiology (PhD) in the Department of Microbiology, at the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, New York University Medical Center, New York, New York. Dr. Bifani's thesis title was "Genetic Analysis of Natural Populations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Using Molecular Fingerprinting Tools". He completed his Master of Science Degree (Biochemistry) in the Department of Biochemistry at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, with his thesis "Design, Synthesis and Cloning of Industrial Lipase". Dr. Bifani's Bachelor of Science Degree, was earned through the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

The Institut Pasteur de Lille is a recognized authority in the field of tuberculosis research and consists of 3 Federative Research Groups and 14 research teams in partnership with INSERM, CNRS, Universities and the Regional Hospital of Lille.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a resurgent problem in industrialized countries. The wide use of antibiotics gave the impression that this was a disease under control. The advent of AIDS and multi-drug resistance has undermined this notion. The increase in TB during the late eighties and early nineties coincided with a rising incidence of AIDS. The immune suppressed AIDS population facilitates the spread of TB. Treatment of TB currently requires a long and comparatively complicated course of antibiotic therapy. The nature of this treatment and the epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, lend themselves to the development of drug resistance. This rising tide of drug resistance and the varying efficacy of available treatments is driving Regma's search for alternative therapies through its novel methods and technologies.

Regma develops novel methods, agents, and technologies for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Regma's overall strategy includes the development of drug systems, which can increase the bioavailability of the drug at a cellular level.
