AIDS and Complementary and Alternative Therapy details the effectiveness of various CAM therapies, including botanical, nutritional, homeopathic and psycho-spiritual treatment for AIDS. Dr. Standish has also authored several sections in the volume.
The book contains reviews of the latest AIDS research, including studies from Bastyr University. Also discussed are the challenges surrounding the scientific evaluation of CAM as well as an examination of the complex pathogenesis of AIDS. The book is one in a series of Medical Guides, published by Churchill Livingstone, a Harcourt Health Sciences Company.
Another of the book's editors and authors is Carlo Calabrese, ND, MPH, Adjunct Senior Scientist at Bastyr. The third editor is Mary Lou Galantino, PT, MS, PhD, Professor of Physical Therapy at Richard Stockton College in New Jersey and Clinical Specialist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Bastyr University Research Institute has been on the forefront of CAM research on HIV/AIDS since 1988 when Dr. Standish established the Healing AIDS Research Project. That effort was presented to the British Parliament in 1991 and led to the establishment of one of the nation's leading treatment centers, at Bastyr University. In 1994, that center was the first CAM program to receive federal money for HIV/AIDS research.
Along with her own research work, Dr. Standish specializes in the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. She points out the critical need for more information in this area. "People with HIV/AIDS are often eager to educate themselves about all aspects of the disease and treatment possibilities and this book will be valuable in that respect. The book also addresses integrative care, a mix of conventional medicine and CAM, which is of great interest to both patients and MDs."
