UC Berkeley Extension Explains the Drug Development Process

Business Wire - September 8, 2000

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Sept. 8, 2000--New drug discoveries are changing the way we live. From Viagra to protease-inhibitor "cocktails," newly discovered drugs are expanding the quality and extending the length of our lives. But just how do these life-changing drugs go from concept to finished product? This fall, UC Berkeley Extension offers an opportunity to join pharmaceutical expert John M. Young and ten guest speakers for an in-depth examination of the complex and highly interrelated steps of the drug development process.

"The Drug Development Process" will take place Wednesday to Friday, October 18-20, 8:30 am-5 pm, at UC Berkeley Extension Downtown, 425 Market St., 8th floor, in San Francisco. The cost is $1,245. Enrollment is limited, so early enrollment is advised. To enroll, call (510) 642-4111 or enroll online at www.unex.berkeley.edu . This intensive short course is for new and experienced professionals from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other health-related industries, as well as venture capitalists, patent attorneys and other service providers who wish to improve their understanding of this booming industry.

Speakers will lead participants though the major scientific, business and regulatory stages of the drug development process - from the inception of an idea for a New Chemical Entity and its development through the launch of a successful new compound and beyond. Emphasis will be on the importance of early-stage integration of all activities, from drug discovery and development to marketing.

Topics include the functions and role of pharmacology, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, toxicology and CMC/pharmaceutical development; the IND package; the phases of clinical trials and clinical data management; the regulatory review and approval process; the role of the F.D.A; commercial development, including strategic marketing and planning for successful launch; patent and intellectual property issues; and financing.

John M. Young is a senior pharmaceutical executive with more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of market-driven drug development. He has held several director-level positions at Syntex and is currently vice president of product development at several start-up companies, and is an active consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry.
