OraSure is the only oral specimen collection device approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for screening and confirmatory testing for antibodies to HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS. The event features testing and counseling of participating celebrities including Reverend Jackson, Brian Mitchell of The Washington Redskins and actor Dennis Haysbert of the CBS series, "Now and Again." Reverend Jackson will publicly address the AIDS crisis within the African-American community to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS problem, to help destigmatize the testing process and to encourage African-Americans to know their HIV status.
Robert D. Thompson, Epitope's president and chief executive officer said, "We continue to support the critical efforts of public health organizations, like the Whitman Walker Clinic, for AIDS awareness and treatment. They provide the front-line defense against the spread of HIV in our communities. OraSure is a proven, accurate alternative to blood testing with greater patient participation as it eliminates the problems associated with the fear of needles and the dangers of needle-stick injuries for healthcare workers. We hope if it's less intimidating and easier be tested with OraSure, more people will take action to help slow the spread of this disease."
