World AIDS Day Brings Powerful Voices to Gay.com; December 1 Online Chats Host Top AIDS Vaccine Scientists

Business Wire - November 23, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 23, 1999--This year's theme for World AIDS Day, observed December 1, will be Ending the Silence -- a mission embraced wholeheartedly by Gay.com, The Gay Network (www.gay.com) and its special guest experts that day.

On Wednesday, December 1, Gay.com will present a distinctive hour-long program of on-line chat and education for its global audience -- focused entirely on the scientific and human conquest of HIV/AIDS -- while inviting online visitors to ask questions of some of the world's best minds.

"We share a passionate commitment to defeating HIV and AIDS in all our work. World AIDS Day now affords us a laser responding to our community's questions and their thirst for solid information," said Lowell Selvin, CEO of Online Partners, parent company of Gay.com.

"As the world's largest affinity portal for gays and lesbians, Gay.com will help banish ignorance and shine a stronger light on the advances and hopes of AIDS scientists and educators."

The unprecedented chat -- scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST (12:00 noon PST) -- will highlight three of the world's leading scientists committed to achieving the first AIDS vaccine.

The three AIDS experts include:

-- Dr. David Ho, Director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center (NY). Dr. Ho was honored as Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1996. The Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center is recognized as the world's largest private lab dedicated solely to AIDS research.

-- Dr. Irvin S. Y. Chen, Director of the UCLA AIDS Institute (LA). Dr. Chen is known worldwide for his pioneering work as a molecular virologist; U.S. News also ranks the UCLA facility as fourth in the nation for AIDS research.

-- Dr. Rafi Ahmed, Director of the Emory Vaccine Center (Atlanta). Dr. Ahmed is one of the world's leading experts on T-cell memory, and today, is leading the EVC comprehensive vaccine research program.

(NOTE: All three researchers and their labs are the beneficiaries of this year's first-ever Alaska AIDS Vaccine Ride that takes place between Fairbanks and Anchorage next August, involving more than 2,000 men and women from around the world. See www.alaskaride.org for details.)

Later in the month of December, Gay.com also plans to host the first online chat with Jeanne White, mother of the late Ryan White, and one of our nation's most admired and thoughtful AIDS educators and policy advocates. The federal government's major funding for AIDS services and support today is combined under the national program bearing her late son's name, the Ryan White CARE Act.

Jeanne White now serves as a national spokesperson and educator for AIDS Action, based in Washington, D.C. Named by the New York Times as "among the country's most powerful advocacy groups," AIDS Action is a network of 3,200 national community-based organizations and the one million HIV-positive Americans they help serve. It is the only organization singularly dedicated to responsible federal policy for improved care and services, robust medical research and effective prevention.
