From the CEO's office to the shipping dock, the people at Clif Bar have plunged wholeheartedly into the Tanqueray's American AIDS Ride fundraiser project this year. Nearly all 80 employees are involved, an outstanding example of an entire company's dedication to a single cause. One person who had never even been on a bicycle in her life learned to ride so she could participate.
Clif Bar Inc. is committed so deeply to fighting AIDS that it provides each of its cyclists and ride volunteers with airfare, hotel accommodations and paid time off. Three personal trainers - one of the company's many fitness-related employee benefits - lead workouts and training rides to prepare people for the physical demands of the AIDS Rides.
Fifty employees will be bicycling in one of the AIDS Rides. Most of the rest will staff a Clif Bar "Pit Stop" on each day of each AIDS Ride or volunteer in some other capacity. The series of five AIDS Rides, which take place across the country from June through October, last up to seven days each and cover up to 560 miles - close to 100 miles a day for as long as a solid week.
AIDS has personally touched many people in the company, including some who have lost family and friends to the disease. Still others find participating in the AIDS Rides to be one of the most powerful emotional experiences of their lives.
"So many have lost so much to AIDS. Despite recent medical advances, there is still no cure," said Thomas. "The entire Clif Bar staff felt we could really make an impact by working together to help fight AIDS."
The AIDS Rides are the nation's largest and most successful AIDS fundraisers. After this year's event, more than $100 million will have been raised - more money to AIDS charities more quickly than any other AIDS fundraiser in history.
Clif Bar Inc. of Berkeley, Calif., a leading maker of great-tasting, all-natural energy and nutrition foods, is dedicated to making a positive contribution to society.
