According to Dr. Skinner, "Numerous scientists, Universities and other organizations have been working on a vaccine for AIDS over the last 10 years. Most of these studies have developed traditional approaches using old technology that have produced little in the hope for a vaccine to successfully battle the AIDS virus. We have developed a new approach to the AIDS problem through the creation of an intracellular vaccine that is based on a technology proven in clinical trials with both herpes genitalis and pre-clinical research into cytomegalovirus and equine herpes vaccines. Not only is the vaccine expected to prevent the disease, but it also may prevent the onset of AIDS in HIV positive patients."

In conjunction with The Russian AIDS Center, the toxicity and immunogenicity phases of vaccine development are being completed. A pilot study using laboratory animals has shown that the intracellular method is a viable approach.

Clinical trials will be underway within nine months, with completion of studies and Government approvals within two to three years.

The United Nations estimates that there are currently 30.6 million people infected worldwide with the AIDS virus. The disease is spreading at a rate of 10,000 people each day. It is estimated that the number of people infected with the AIDS virus by the end of the year 2000 will be 55 million.
