(BW) (UC-BERKELEY-EXTENSION) Explore All the Stages of Drug Development With UC Berkeley Extension

BUSINESS WIRE; Tuesday, 2 June 1998

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--June 2, 1998--The development of new drugs is a lengthy, complex and costly process.

It can also prove profitable; for example, more than 40,000 prescriptions for the new drug Viagra were written in just one week. But what process does a drug like Viagra go through before it can be prescribed?

This summer, UC Berkeley Extension will offer professionals and non-scientific professionals in the biotech, pharmaceutical and other health-related industries an opportunity for a greater understanding of the complete drug development process. "An Overview of the Drug Development Process" will take place on Mondays, June 8 - July 13, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, in 8 Sigall Building, Sacred Heart Preparatory Academy, 150 Valparaiso Avenue, Atherton. The fee is $250. Continuing education units are available. To enroll by phone, call 510/642-4111; or visit Extension's website at www.berkeley.edu/unex.

The course will be taught by John Young, Ph.D, and Diane Gordon, Ph.D. Young is a consultant and pharmaceutical executive with more than 28 years of experience in all aspects of market-driven drug development. Gordon, who works with Roche Bioscience, has 15 years of project management experience in the pharmaceutical industry, and holds degrees in pharmacy and pharmaceutical technology.

In a step-by-step approach, Young and Gordon start from the inception of an idea for a new compound and go on through market launch and post-marketing surveillance of the successful product. They discuss the discovery process, preclinical studies, clinical trials, CMC/pharmaceutical development and the regulatory review and approval processes. Students will leave the course with an understanding and appreciation of drug discovery, development and commercial activities as an integrated business process that contributes to the successful advancement of a drug to market. Enrollment is limited.
