(BW) (INFORMIX-SOFTWARE)(IFMX) Informix and The NAMES Project Foundation Marry Technology with Dynamic Art to Produce Worldwide Access to AIDS Memorial Quilt; Web Site Encompasses Over 40,000 Quilt Panels Managed And Searchable by Informix Database

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Monday, November 24, 1997.

MENLO PARK, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1997-- Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ:IFMX) the leading provider of innovative database technology, and The NAMES Project Foundation, today announced the AIDS Memorial Quilt web site, a virtual display of over 70,000 names and over 43,000 images that make up the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

The web site is slated to be launched on December 1st in honor of World AIDS Day. Visitors can access the site on the NAMES Project Homepage, located at http://www.aidsquilt.org, under the "List of NAMES" icon.

Utilizing the Informix Dynamic Server(TM) database with Universal Data Option(TM), the NAMES Project Foundation has rendered the world's largest AIDS-related archive memorializing those who have lost their lives in the AIDS epidemic.

The web site is the result of an effort to create a timeless archive of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. In order to preserve the aging quilt, the quilt has been professionally photographed and the images digitized, then stored on a CD-ROM. Today, those images are being stored and managed by the Informix database, making it possible for visitors to access the display from anywhere in the world.

As part of the collaborative web development project, Informix and its partners, SUN Microsystems, Argos Adriatic Corporation, and ECOlogic Corporation along with Masterlink donated technology, consulting and training services.

"The Memorial Quilt Web site is a perfect example of how technology can impact the community in a very humane way," said Anthony Turney, executive director of the NAMES Project Foundation. "We are thankful for the expertise and support all these companies have given us, and with them, hope to bring awareness to communities around the world about those who have, today and tomorrow suffer from AIDS."

Interesting Quilt Facts

The AIDS Memorial Quilt physically laid-out for display would today be the size of 25 football fields and weigh approximately 57 tons. Contributors of quilt panels come from approximately 36 countries around the world from Argentina to Zambia.

"The Quilts' size and weight limits our ability to put it on display where everyone can see it," said Scott Croft, NAMES Project Online Systems Administrator.

"The Web site alleviates that problem by giving visitors access to see the quilt at any time from any country. We also anticipate in excess of 500,000 hits per month to the site, and need a robust database like Informix's that can manage the traffic so that visitors get fast accessibility to the images. And as we continue to add more and more quilt panels to the site, the database system will scale accordingly."

About the NAMES Project Foundation

The NAMES Project Foundation's mission is to "use the AIDS Memorial Quilt to help bring an end to AIDS." The organization works towards this mission through its Quilt display programs. Programs raise awareness of the HIV epidemic, which is a crucial tool in the prevention and eventual termination of HIV. As part of its mission, the virtual web display is the NAMES Project's latest effort to expand access to the Quilt.
