SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1997-- Rick Weiss New Hope Apartments to Provide the City's First-Ever Long-Term Assisted Housing For Individuals & Families in Need

Nonprofit AIDS service organization Project New Hope will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rick Weiss New Hope Apartments on Friday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the project site, 1637 Appian Way in Santa Monica.

City of Santa Monica Mayor Pam O'Connor will deliver the keynote address at approximately 11:30 a.m. "This is a clear demonstration of the compassion that our city has for men, women and children who are living with HIV & AIDS," stated O'Connor.

The first of its kind in the City of Santa Monica, the 25-apartment complex represents the state-of-the-art in providing long-term assisted housing for low-income individuals and families living with HIV & AIDS. Named in honor of Rick Weiss, a Santa Monica community activist lost to AIDS, the courtyard apartments are designed to provide comfortable and stable long-term housing while facilitating access to the range of services needed.

"Through a community-based collaboration with the Santa Monica AIDS Project, we will work as a team to see that our residents receive access to the full spectrum of care they need to deal with this disease," stated Project New Hope Executive Director Scott Figenshow.

"We're delighted to be working with Project New Hope as they create that most needed of resources, a home," added Santa Monica AIDS Project Executive Director Hywel Sims.

The Rick Weiss New Hope Apartments is a project led by affordable housing developer and vocational training provider Project New Hope, together with the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica AIDS Project, the City of Los Angeles Housing Department's HOPWA Program, the Community Development Commission of the County of Los Angeles, the Episcopal AIDS Ministry, U.S. Trust, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and individual donors.

Project New Hope has been honored by being named a recipient organization of the collection at the official Los Angeles service of remembrance and thanksgiving for the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, to be held at St. James' Episcopal Church this Saturday. Corporate support for the groundbreaking event comes from Pacific Bell, The Gas Co. and Southern California Edison.
