(BW) (CHIRON)(CHIR) Chiron Announces Dr. Liu to Head U.S. Vaccines Research; Addition of Preeminent Vaccine Specialist Expands Chiron's Scientific Expertise

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - 8 September 1997.

EMERYVILLE, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Sept. 8, 1997--Chiron Corporation (NASDAQ:CHIR) announced today the appointment of Margaret A. Liu, M.D., as vice president of vaccines research.

Dr. Liu will be responsible for all Chiron's U.S. vaccine research including work on DNA-based vaccines. She will report directly to Lewis T. Williams, Ph.D., M.D., president of Chiron Technologies.

Before joining Chiron, Dr. Liu was senior director of virus and cell biology at Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, Pa. In this position, she was responsible for research related to antigen processing and presentation, novel vaccines, adjuvants and delivery systems, combination vaccines and bacterial conjugate vaccines.

Her pioneering work in the area of DNA vaccines has led to her receipt of honorary lectureships including the Rose Lectureship at Columbia University College of Physician's and Surgeons, the Inaugural Saul Krugman Memorial Lecture at New York University and this year's M.R. Hilleman Lecture at Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania.

"Margaret, whose broad experience integrates scientific, clinical and commercial perspectives, is one of the preeminent vaccines investigators in this country. Her groundbreaking work in the area of DNA-based vaccines has also established her reputation internationally," said Dr. Lewis Williams.

"Her appointment underscores Chiron's commitment to expanding its research programs in vaccines and exploring new vaccine technologies. We believe that Chiron's strengths in DNA-delivery systems and in the vaccines area are a strong match with Margaret's proven talents in the area of DNA-based vaccines and should provide a productive environment for Margaret in the development of novel vaccine products."

Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Liu was a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she obtained extensive training in immunology. She held a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School, and was the recipient of an NIH Physician Scientist Award. Additionally, she has been elected as a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and as a Fellow of the Molecular Medicine Society.

Dr. Liu has an M.D. degree from Harvard University and earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry summa cum laude from The Colorado College. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, clinical and research fellowships in endocrinology also at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Liu is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has a subspeciality certification in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. Additionally, over the past 12 years Dr. Liu has over 70 publications and numerous patents filed or issued.

Two of Chiron Corporation's business units have complementary responsibilities for vaccines. Chiron Vaccines currently markets and sells a variety of adult and pediatric vaccines internationally -- both directly, and through its joint business with Behringwerke AG, a subsidiary of Hoechst AG.

Chiron Technologies is responsible for the discovery and development of a broad line of conventional and novel vaccine products designed to be safer and more effective than those currently available. In her role, Dr. Liu will play a key role on the overall management team of vaccines.

Chiron Corporation, headquartered in Emeryville, is a science-driven, market-directed healthcare company that combines diagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic strategies for controlling diseases.
