(BW) Metropolitan Water District Recommits To Campaign Against Cryptosporidium

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Tuesday, 19 August 1997.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 1997--Recommitting itself to research and public education about a potentially deadly organism, Metropolitan Water District's board of directors today authorized $442,000 for a third year of its Cryptosporidium Action Plan.

"Around-the-clock monitoring of our filtration plants and regular tests of our source water are major factors in the high quality of Southern California's drinking water," said Metropolitan General Manager John R. Wodraska.

"Further reducing the region's already low risk is our Cryptosporidium Action Plan, which has made important progress in dealing with this potentially deadly organism," Wodraska said.

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic protozoan responsible for sporadic outbreaks of waterborne illness around the world. Traditional drinking water disinfectants such as chlorine are ineffective against the organism. Additionally, there is no effective medication for Cryptosporidiosis , a disease that can cause flu-like symptoms in healthy people but prove fatal to people with suppressed immune systems .

Mark D. Beuhler, director of water quality for Metropolitan, said the district's $3.3 million Cryptosporidium Action Plan has focused on tightening the district's filtration and treatment procedures; increased monitoring of source water; research; and public education.

"Information developed by the Action Plan will allow Metropolitan and its 27 member agencies to increase the region's protection against Crypto and to influence national policy with sound scientific data," Beuhler said.

NOTE TO EDITORS: The Metropolitan Water District is a regional water agency that imports water from Northern California and the Colorado River, and delivers it on a wholesale basis to the coastal plain of Southern California. Through its 27 member public agencies, the district provides almost 60 percent of the water used by nearly 16 million people living in portions of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties.
