(BW) (HOME-ACCESS-HEALTH) Home Access Health Urges Consumer Caution Via Internet

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Thursday, 7 August 1997.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 7, 1997--Home health care consumers searching the Internet should be aware of the marketing activities of unapproved and illegal HIV home test kits according to Home Access Health Corporation, the leader in telemedicine, providing fast and convenient at-home medical testing and consultation.

Home Access Health vice president and chief scientific officer Michael G. Wandell said the Home Access HIV Test System is the only HIV home collection test system currently on the market approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"The two best Internet sources for information on at-home HIV tests are Home Access Health and the FDA," said Wandell. "Consumers must be cautious about any other web site that offers home HIV test kits for sale, especially sites that claim to provide test results in a matter of minutes."

Information on the Home Access Health site (www.homeaccess.com) is considered labeling by the FDA and the accuracy of the web site's content is within the federal agency's jurisdiction.

"The Home Access Health web site provides detailed information on the safety and accuracy of our HIV test system, including the results of our clinical trials as published in February of this year by the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine," Wandell said.

The FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) also provides a detailed information sheet on at home HIV testing on its web site which explains the difference between approved and unapproved HIV home collection systems. The site can be found at www.fda.gov/cber . If consumers have other questions related to HIV home test kits, they can call the HIV/AIDS Program of the FDA, in the Office of Special Health Issues (301 827-4460) for further information.

Home Access Express (results in three days) and Home Access (results in seven days) allow people to test anonymously for HIV within the privacy of their own homes and get results and counseling by telephone. Home Access HIV tests are available by mail by calling 1 800 HIV-TEST and are carried in more than 18,000 drugstores throughout the US including: Brooks, Duane Reade, Eckerd Drug, Farmacias El Amal, Genovese, Kroger, Osco, Phar-Mor, Revco, Rite Aid, Sav-On, Thrifty PayLess, Walgreens and Wal-Mart. More information about Home Access Health can be found at the website www.homeaccess.com .
