(BW) (HIV-THERAPY-AUDIT) New HIV Therapy Audit: The Only Projectable Database of Patients Seeking Treatment

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Wednesday, 16 July 1997

NEWTOWN, Pa.--(BW HealthWire)--July 16, 1997--Scott-Levin, a leading provider of consulting services to the pharmaceutical industry, today introduced the HIV Therapy Audit, the first product of its kind and the only projectable database of patients seeking treatment due to their HIV status.

"While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covers reported cases of AIDS and a broad estimate of HIV+ cases, the agency does not provide estimates on the number of HIV+ patients receiving drug therapy," said Joy Scott, CEO, Scott-Levin. "Scott-Levin's audit provides this unique data to those interested in the current state of HIV+ therapy."

The audit projects data from general and family practitioners, internists, and infectious disease specialists who are actively treating HIV+ patients.

The first edition of the audit, now available from Scott-Levin, shows:

-- A projected 316,890 HIV+ patients are seeking treatment during the first quarter of 1997.

-- 14% of visits for HIV+ status do not include drug therapy

-- Merck's Crixivan is projected as the most-prescribed protease inhibitor, used in the first quarter of 1997 (80,200 patients).

-- Patient demographics indicate that of patients seeking treatment, 75% are male and 25% are female.

-- Patient mix by race is 49% white, 33% black, and 16% Hispanic

-- About 40% of patients' medical and drug therapy is covered by Medicaid, the most common form of payment.

-- Most patient contacts (63%) take place in a doctor's office, with 18% of visits at a hospital clinic location and 11% of contacts in the hospital itself.

"We hope and strongly feel that the data provided in the HIV Therapy Audit will help the pharmaceutical industry to better understand and meet the needs of HIV+ patients," said Scott.
