(BW) MGA Software announces latest version of ACSL BioMed for simulating clinical drug trials; Pharmacia & Upjohn Selects ACSL BioMed to Improve Clinical Trial Designs, Bring Drugs to Market Faster

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Monday, 19 May 1997.

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1997--In a move that will strengthen MGA Software Inc.'s dominant presence in the clinical trial simulation market, the Company announced today the availability of ACSL BioMed 2.1. This latest version of ACSL BioMed, targeted to pharmacologists who are novice simulation software users, provides the added functionality of the BioMed Wizard. This new feature prompts users to answer a series of questions about their study parameters such as dosing and sampling schedules, and then automatically builds a model of the clinical trial and simulates the likely outcomes.

As the pharmaceutical industry's first software solution that simulates clinical drug trials, MGA's ACSL BioMed enables companies to improve their drug development process by reducing the number of failed trials, reducing development costs and bringing therapies to market faster. As both small and large pharmaceutical companies compete for the revenues gained by being the first-to-market with drug therapies for cancer, AIDS, and other diseases, organizations like Pharmacia & Upjohn are using ACSL BioMed to streamline their drug development process.

"ACSL BioMed enables us to take our study designs to a higher level," said Dr. Patty Ruppel, Director of Clinical and Research Biostatistics at Pharmacia & Upjohn. "It forces us to look more carefully at how we're designing and analyzing studies and helps us to improve our trials' efficiency and focus our results. Consequently, this solution will provide value at several levels of our drug development process."

For clinical trials ranging from a single patient to thousands of patients, researchers use ACSL BioMed to design, pre-test and modify study parameters before conducting live trials. ACSL BioMed is based on MGA's powerful simulation language ACSL (Advanced Continuous Simulation Language), first developed 20 years ago and is now the standard language in continuous system simulation.

"The release of ACSL BioMed 2.1 once again reflects our customer-driven approach to product development," said Michael Gauthier, president of MGA Software. "Pharmacologists who are not familiar with our software told us that they needed an easy-to-use tool that allowed them to quickly build and simulate models of their clinical trials . The BioMed Wizard gives them a framework for the step-by-step process of building a model based on their unique set of parameters."

Pricing and Availability

ACSL BioMed 2.1 is currently available for customers with PC systems for $20,000. In addition, MGA's customers have access to the Company's superior technical support services. For help with specific modelling questions, customers can call 1-800-647-ACSL, email "support@mga.com" for on-line help, or correspond with other ACSL users at "acsl@mga.com". The Company also provides ACSL workshops on a regular basis.

MGA Software, founded in 1975, developed the first commercially successful language for modelling the dynamics of continuous systems -- ACSL (Advanced Continuous Simulation Language). Based on the Society for Computer Simulation's CSSL standard, ACSL is widely regarded as the standard software environment for modelling dynamic systems in industries such as aerospace, automotive, chemical processing, power design, agricultural and pharmaceutical research. MGA provides a full spectrum of industry solutions that include simulation specification, data analysis, hardware-in-the-loop testing, visualization and animation. Today, the privately held company has over 3,500 licenses worldwide representing over 10,000 users.
