BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Thursday, 6 February 1997.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 6, 1997--On Monday, Feb. 10, the Marcus A. Conant Foundation will present a review of the 4th National Conference on Retroviruses & Opportunistic Infections.

The conference, which took place in late January in Washington, D.C. is one of the most important gatherings in HIV/AIDS treatment information.

Data presented at the annual event suggests recent advances can possibly make HIV a chronic manageable illness. New medications including a second generation of protease inhibitors, and new classes of reverse trancriptase inhibitors used in combination have demonstrated the ability to lower the amount of virus in a person's blood, viral load, and increase T cells.

Improvements in treatments have also shown a reduction in the number of opportunistic infections in people with HIV.

Reviewing the conference findings will be:

-- Paul Volberding, M.D., Director, Center for AIDS Research at San Francisco General Hospital.

-- Marcus A. Conant, M.D., Medical Director, Conant Medical Group

-- Martin Delaney, Founding Director, Project Inform

-- Ronald Baker, Ph.D., Director, Treatment Education and Advocacy, San Francisco AIDS Foundation

The review takes place at the Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason Street at O'Farrell Street, Nikko Ballroom, Third Floor, Monday, Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A press conference is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

This event is wheelchair accessible and translation will be provided for the hearing impaired.

The Marcus A. Conant Foundation is dedicated to helping the HIV community lead healthier lives through education and patient advocacy.
