The new agreement was announced in Taipei by Chung Mei Enterprises during a Nov. 27 press conference launching the condom in Taiwan.
The female condom is set to hit the shelves in Taiwan under the brand name femidom during the first quarter of 1997.
Ben-Yuan Lin, CEO of Chung Mei Enterprises, stated, "We are pleased with this agreement and are optimistic about the female condom's success. The fact that this announcement received coverage from 70 percent of Taiwan's newspapers suggests that we are responding to a significant need in this country."
Dr. Mary Ann Leeper, president and chief operating officer of The Female Health Co., said, "Our partnership with Chung Mei Enterprises creates exciting opportunities for The Female Health Company. We believe the success of the condom in Taiwan will lead to additional partnerships that will enhance its availability and affordability worldwide.
"We are currently in discussions with potential partners in a number of countries and we hope to be able to announce additional contractual arrangements as they are completed."
Founded as a pharmaceutical company in 1936, Chung Mei Enterprises is comprised of several operating subsidiaries, including Chung Mei Pharmaceuticals, a manufacturer of more than 500 pharmaceutical products, Sea Lucky, an importer of more than 30 health and beauty aid products, Mei Chou Pharmaceutical, a pharmaceutical distribution company, Megalin International, a distributor of sports beverages and Health Trend Rx, a franchise chain of 200 pharmacy stores.
