(BW) VIMRx Reports Clinical Trial Results For VIMRxyn for AIDS

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 -

WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--September 19, 1996--VIMRx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq SmallCap:VMRX) has announced that results from its Phase I/Phase II clinical trial in Thailand indicate that a well tolerated oral dose with no untoward toxicity or cutaneous photosensitivity has been identified as 0.05 mg/kg of VIMRxyn, synthetic hypericin. At this dose level, VIMRxyn was administered once daily for 28 days to 12 HIV infected patients.

Anti-HIV activity, as determined by a reduction in viral load, was quantitated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to measure plasma HIV RNA. Maximum changes from baseline values observed for viral load at any time point among the patients dosed at 0.05 mg/kg ranged from essentially no change to a 1.50 log (97%) reduction, with a trend for larger decreases observed in those patients with higher baseline viral load values. VIMRx CEO Richard L. Dunning said that additional clinical trials involving longer dosing regimens and use of VIMRxyn in combination with other anti-HIV drugs will be necessary to evaluate the clinical efficacy of VIMRxyn in more detail.

VIMRx, based in Wilmington, Delaware, specializes in therapies to fight viral and retroviral diseases, as well as cancer. It has exclusive worldwide rights to develop VIMRxyn. Additional efforts are underway on the development of VIMRxyn for the treatment of brain cancer (malignant glioma) and chronic hepatitis C, as well as for use in improving safety of blood supplies.
