(BW) (NAMES-PROJECT/QUILT/AOL) First Online Display of the Quilt takes place Dec. 1 on America Online; World AIDS Day Will Mark First Display of AIDS Memorial Quilt Held in Cyberspace

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Monday, 25 November 1996.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1996--In observance of World AIDS Day, the NAMES Project Foundation will launch the first-ever online display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on Dec. 1, 1996. The on-line display will feature six Quilt sections that include 48 individual memorial panels commemorating the lives of individuals lost to AIDS.

Featured panels will include basic biographical information about the person commemorated, and selected panels will have accompanying letters from loved ones that offer further glimpses into the individuals' lives. Throughout December, the display will be accessible through America Online's main screen by clicking the button "World AIDS Day," or after Dec. 31 through a list box on the NAMES Project's America Online web site.

"This online display allows the NAMES Project to reach communities all around the world with the Quilt's message of compassion, hope and awareness," said Anthony Turney, NAMES Project Foundation Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. "Although the Quilt is displayed in some 2,000 U.S. locations every year, some individuals and families do not have an opportunity to experience the Quilt in its traditional settings."

The NAMES Project increasingly is using the Internet as a tool to show the Quilt to a broad global audience. On World AIDS Day 1995, the NAMES Project debuted its worldwide web site which can be accessed through http://www.aidsquilt.org

In conjunction with the display of the entire Quilt in Washington this October, an interactive web site (keyword: NAMES Project) was launched for America Online users. This latest online effort complements over 1,000 World AIDS Day displays of the actual Quilt which are occurring in 150 U.S. cities, 12 foreign countries and one U.S. territory.

Founded in 1987, the NAMES Project Foundation sponsors and displays the AIDS Memorial Quilt to help bring an end to the AIDS epidemic. Through a network of 45 national NAMES Project chapters and 36 international affiliates, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is seen annually by more than one million people at nearly 2,000 displays. To date, over 8 million people have visited the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
