The patent, entitled "Electrically Hydrolyzed Salines as Microbicides for In Vitro Treatment of Contaminated Fluids Containing Blood (as amended)," is expected to become effective in the next several weeks.
The current NOA relates to the use of MDI-P to sterilize or inactivate infectious agents such as hepatitis or the AIDS virus that may be present in blood or fractionated blood products. The Food and Drug Administration has requested that blood fractionator companies provide them with improved protocols to verify the removal of these infectious agents, and Vice President and Director Marlin Toombs expressed optimism that MDI-P will help to fulfill this requirement.
"With a market of well over $1 billion, the blood sterilization industry offers a tremendous opportunity for companies that can effectively protect patients against dangerous microbes that are resistant to present treatments. This patent will further extend the protection of MDI-P and its many clinically and economically relevant applications," said Toombs.
