(BW) Enzo Biochem files patent application for GenSert universal gene delivery system; new product allows radically different approach in battle to combat AIDS

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - 15 Dec 1995

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1995--Enzo Biochem Inc. (ASE:ENZ) announced today that it has filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office related to a new gene delivery system that is designed to provide universal and efficient delivery of any gene to any cell.

This universal gene delivery system, GenSert(TM) is being combined with Enzo's proprietary genetic antisense technology as a product for the treatment of AIDS.

Designed to prevent the HIV virus from replicating inside cells, it will be the first commercial therapeutic product to emerge from Enzo's development efforts and is targeted to provide the medical community with a powerful new weapon in the fight against AIDS.

The potency of this AIDS therapeutic is enhanced by the incorporation of several novel features. These include genetic constructs (genes) that can direct the antisense RNA to the cell nucleus where viral production occurs and where the virus is more susceptible to attack by the antisense RNA. These constructs, which have been designed to contain multiple genes for production of multiple antisense RNAs, have demonstrated a more potent antiviral effect.

"The development of GenSert(TM) is a major product advance for Enzo that effectively signifies the company's evolution from technology development to its commitment to therapeutic product development," said Elazar Rabbani, Ph.D., Enzo's President and Chief Executive Officer.

Genetic antisense technology works by regulating or turning off a gene that produces an undesired product. Antisense does not replace the gene, but serves to block the functioning of the gene, thus preventing further production of the undesired product.

"The ability to control the function of a gene paves the way for a totally new generation of medicines that may be able to address the challenges posed by viral infections and cancers -- two classes of disease that have consistently eluded effective treatment," Dr. Rabbani said.

"We believe that the implications of this universal delivery system are vast and highly promising, not only for genetic antisense, but also for other gene therapies," continued Dr. Rabbani. "Enzo's gene delivery system is one of the first such universal systems to apply to any gene in any cell and is currently being developed with genetic antisense methodologies directed to a variety of viral diseases and cancers."

Preclinical testing is currently underway at a major medical center to determine the efficacy of Enzo's HIV product in human cells outside the body. Early results have been encouraging. Once concluded, the company plans to move into human clinical studies.

Enzo Biochem is engaged in the research, development and manufacture of innovative health care products based on molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques, and in providing diagnostic services to the medical community.
