
PARIS, July 30, 2008 (AFP) - Following are the latest UN figures for the AIDS pandemic, published on Tuesday ahead of the August 3-8 International AIDS Conference in Mexico City:
1) TOTAL INFECTIONS IN 2007:
WORLD:
Around 33 million people had the AIDS virus in 2007, in a range of 30.3 to 36.1 million.
BY REGION:
Sub-Saharan Africa: 22 million
North Africa and Middle East: 380,000, including 320,000 in Sudan
South and Southeast Asia: 4.2 million
East Asia: 740,000
Latin America: 1.7 million
Caribbean: 230,000
North America: 1.2 million
Western and Central Europe: 730,000
Eastern Europe and Central Asia: 1.5 million
Oceania: 74,000
2) NEW INFECTIONS IN 2007:
WORLD:
2.7 million people became infected last year, or around 7,500 people per day on average.
BY REGION:
Sub-Saharan Africa: 1.9 million
North Africa and Middle East: 40,000
South and Southeast Asia: 330,000
East Asia: 52,000
Latin America: 140,000
Caribbean: 20,000
North America: 54,000
Western and Central Europe: 27,000
Eastern Europe and Central Asia: 110,000
Oceania: 13,000
3) AIDS DEATHS IN 2007:
WORLD
Around two million, in a range of 1.8 to 2.3 million, the second consecutive year there has been an annual fall.

Latin America: 63,000
East Asia: 40,000
Caribbean: 14,000
